What is Literacy?

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) defines literacy as the "ability to identify, understand, interpret, create, communicate and compute, using printed and written materials associated with varying contexts. Literacy involves a continuum of learning in enabling individuals to achieve their goals, to develop their knowledge and potential, and to participate fully in their community and wider society"

Read Right Society is a registered non-profit, established in 2008, located in Hope, BC.

Our Vision:

Read Right Society promotes life skill literacy programs that acknowledge people’s needs and work together to teach those skills and empower others to fulfill those needs.  In this way, we become more than we can be by ourselves, and as a community can be something we are all proud of.

Purpose:

Located in Hope, BC, the Read Right Society’s purpose is to:

Rosemaire Dewitt

When famous people come to Hope…they celebrate literacy with us!

40% of BC adults do not have skills needed to read a newspaper, fill out a work application form, read a map or understand a lease.

A 1% increase in literacy levels would raise Canada’s productivity by 2.5%, an estimated $32 billion  boost to the annual GDP.
